This highly competitive, fully funded program is designed to support high-potential African students who aspire to pursue postgraduate studies—Master’s or PhD—in Economics and closely related social science disciplines at leading universities around the world.

About the GAIN Program
The GAIN Program was created to address the underrepresentation of African scholars in top-tier global graduate programs, particularly in Economics and related fields. Many talented students across the continent face barriers such as limited access to mentorship, lack of information about graduate school applications, and insufficient preparation for standardized tests like the GRE. GAIN bridges this gap by offering targeted support to academically strong, highly motivated students with clear research and policy ambitions.
Participants are selected based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and a strong commitment to pursuing advanced training abroad with the long-term goal of contributing to Africa’s development through research, teaching, or policy work.

Participants receive step-by-step support throughout the graduate school application process. This includes guidance on selecting suitable Master’s and PhD programs, identifying top universities and supervisors, understanding application requirements, and preparing competitive application materials such as statements of purpose, research proposals, CVs, and academic references.
Mentorship from Experienced Economists
GAIN connects participants with experienced economists, researchers, and academics from top global institutions. These mentors provide personalized advice on academic pathways, research interests, career planning, and navigating graduate school life. Mentorship is a core pillar of the program and plays a crucial role in shaping participants’ long-term academic and professional goals.
Exposure to Research and Policy Careers
Through webinars, interactive sessions, and mentoring conversations, participants gain deep insights into careers in academic research, international development, public policy, and global institutions. The program helps students understand what it takes to succeed in research-oriented careers and how postgraduate training can be leveraged to influence policy and development outcomes.
GRE Preparation for Selected Participants
For participants who advance to the mentoring phase, the program provides intensive GRE preparation support. This includes a structured GRE bootcamp, study strategies, practice materials, and guidance from instructors and mentors who understand the specific demands of Economics and social science graduate programs.
Who Can Apply?
The GAIN Program is open to talented African students who meet the following criteria:
- Final-year undergraduate students or recent graduates with a Bachelor’s degree
- Current Master’s students or recent Master’s graduates
- Academic background in Economics or closely related fields such as Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Development Studies, Public Policy, or other quantitative social sciences
- Strong academic record with clear evidence of analytical and quantitative ability
- Applicants planning to study abroad and pursue a PhD in Economics or a related discipline, either directly or after completing a Master’s degree
- Strong motivation to contribute to research, teaching, or policy-making in Africa in the long term
The program places a strong emphasis on candidates who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, discipline, commitment to learning, and a clear vision for how advanced training will support their future goals.
Program Structure
The GAIN Program is delivered in phases and combines structured learning with competitive advancement to more intensive support stages.
Mandatory Webinar Series (January onwards)
All selected participants must take part in the GAIN webinar series, which runs from January onward. This phase requires a commitment of approximately 3–5 hours per week and covers topics such as:
- Understanding graduate school pathways in Economics and social sciences
- Building a strong academic profile
- Research skills and academic writing
- Preparing for international applications
- Career pathways in academia and policy
Participation in the webinar series is compulsory and serves as the foundation for progression into the next phase.
Mentoring Phase (Competitive Selection)
After the webinar series, a smaller group of high-performing participants is selected for the mentoring phase. This advanced phase includes:
- Intensive GRE bootcamp and test preparation
- One-on-one and group mentorship sessions
- Personalized feedback on graduate school applications
- Full application support for Master’s and PhD programs
This phase is highly competitive and designed to maximize participants’ chances of gaining admission into top global graduate programs.
