Applications are now open for the Africa Healthcare Innovation Fellowship (AHIF) 2026, a flagship pan-African leadership and innovation programme delivered by InnovateHealth Africa (IHA). This highly competitive fellowship is designed to equip the next generation of African healthcare innovators with the practical skills, real-world experience, and professional networks needed to strengthen health systems and drive sustainable impact across the continent.

As Africa continues to face complex healthcare challenges—ranging from access and affordability to workforce capacity and digital transformation—AHIF 2026 offers young professionals a unique opportunity to move beyond theory and actively co-create solutions within real health system environments.


About AHIF 2026

The 14-week, field-based fellowship is structured to provide an immersive learning experience that blends virtual instruction with on-site engagement. Fellows are embedded directly within health systems across Africa, allowing them to gain first-hand exposure to real-world challenges and participate in the design, testing, and refinement of innovative healthcare solutions.

Fellowship Structure

The AHIF 2026 programme is delivered in carefully sequenced phases to ensure progressive learning and real-world application:

  1. Orientation & Foundational Learning (Virtual)
    Fellows are introduced to core concepts in healthcare innovation, systems thinking, and digital health.
  2. Problem Discovery Through Field Immersion (On-site)
    Participants engage directly with health facilities and communities to identify pressing healthcare challenges.
  3. Problem Validation & Capacity Building (Virtual)
    Fellows refine and validate identified problems using data, stakeholder feedback, and evidence-based frameworks.
  4. Prototyping Lab (On-site)
    Innovative solutions are designed, prototyped, and iteratively improved through collaborative labs.
  5. Field Pilot & Solution Testing (On-site)
    Selected solutions are tested within real health system environments to assess feasibility and impact.
  6. Demo Day With Stakeholders & Partners (Virtual)
    Fellows present their solutions to policymakers, partners, and ecosystem leaders for feedback and potential adoption.

Who Should Apply

AHIF 2026 is open to young African professionals who are passionate about improving health outcomes and driving innovation. Ideal candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • African citizens residing on the continent
  • Aged 18–35 years
  • Background or experience in healthcare, public health, digital health, technology, innovation, or related fields
  • Demonstrated interest in health systems transformation and innovation
  • Ability to commit fully to the 14-week fellowship programme
