The Newton International Fellowship (NIF) is a highly competitive and prestigious programme designed to support outstanding early career researchers from around the world who wish to establish an independent research career in the United Kingdom.
The fellowship provides an exceptional opportunity for talented researchers to gain international research experience, access world-class expertise, broaden their academic perspectives, and develop long-term collaborations with leading UK institutions and scholars.
The programme is jointly administered by the Royal Society and the British Academy, two of the UK’s most respected academic institutions.
About the Fellowship Scheme
The Newton International Fellowship Programme aims to attract and retain emerging global research talent by enabling early career researchers to carry out high-quality, innovative research in the UK. It plays a key role in strengthening the UK’s research ecosystem while fostering international mobility and collaboration.
Through this fellowship, researchers are supported in taking the first major step toward building an independent academic career, while also contributing to the development of a globally connected research and innovation workforce.
Programme Objectives
The core objectives of the Newton International Fellowship Programme are to:
- Attract talented international early career researchers to conduct cutting-edge research in the UK
- Support innovative, high-quality research projects across a wide range of disciplines
- Enable fellows to acquire new research, leadership, and professional development skills
- Promote long-term international collaboration through networking and the Newton International Fellowship alumni network
Applicants whose work falls within humanities and social sciences must submit their applications through the British Academy. Those applying in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields should apply through the Royal Society.

Key Changes to the Scheme (From 2026 Round)
Due to a significant rise in application numbers in recent years, several important changes have been introduced to ensure the long-term sustainability and fairness of the scheme.
Updated Eligibility Rules
- Applicants must have been awarded their PhD or successfully defended their doctoral thesis by the application deadline
- Candidates must have no more than five years of active full-time postdoctoral research experience after their PhD, with career breaks taken into account
Sponsor Limitations
- Each UK academic sponsor may support only one application per round
- This limit applies to individual sponsors, not institutions
Changes to the Application Form
- The application now consists of three sections (Parts A, B, and C)
- Heads of Department are no longer required to submit a PDF statement; instead, they will confirm support directly within the application form
- Only one nominated reference is required (from either the UK or overseas), instead of two
Revised Selection Process
- Applications will be submitted once but assessed in two stages
- An initial triage stage will review Part A
- Longlisted candidates will then have their full applications (Parts A and B) reviewed
Additional and Privately Funded Awards
As part of a broader UK initiative to attract global research talent, the Royal Society has announced up to £30 million in funding over two years, including £10 million dedicated to early career researchers. This funding will support additional awards through existing fellowship schemes, including the Newton International Fellowship.
Applicants do not need to apply separately for these additional awards; all applications should be submitted through the standard NIF round.
Royal Society K C Wong International Fellowships
Through a partnership with the K C Wong Education Foundation, additional fellowships are available for applicants based in China. These awards are selected from the same applicant pool and carry equal value and prestige to the Newton International Fellowships.

What the Fellowship Offers
The Newton International Fellowship provides funding of up to £280,000 over two years.
Covered Costs Include:
- Salary at the host institution, including associated on-costs
- Research and project expenses
- Relocation and visa costs for fellows and eligible dependants (partner and children)
- Estate and indirect costs
In exceptional cases, the funding cap may be exceeded to cover justified relocation or visa expenses.
The programme also offers flexible working arrangements to accommodate personal circumstances, including part-time work, caring responsibilities, parental leave, extended sick leave, and childcare support for conferences or research travel.
Fellows gain access to extensive career development opportunities, such as leadership training, science communication, public engagement activities, and policy engagement initiatives.
After completing the fellowship, successful candidates may also be eligible for alumni funding to support continued collaboration with UK-based researchers.
Eligibility Criteria
You are eligible to apply if:
- You hold a PhD or will have successfully defended your doctoral thesis before the application deadline
- You have no more than five years of postdoctoral research experience (excluding career breaks)
- You are based outside the UK and do not hold UK citizenship
- You have strong written and spoken English proficiency
- Your research falls within the Royal Society’s remit of the natural sciences, including biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and physics
- You have secured a UK academic sponsor who will mentor and support your research throughout the fellowship
Applicants of any nationality are welcome, and those requiring a visa may apply under the Global Talent Visa fast-track endorsement route.
