Overview

The Multilateral Diplomacy Program Unit (MDPU) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) offers a traineeship program tailored for students and recent graduates seeking hands-on experience in a multicultural, international setting. This opportunity allows participants to deepen their understanding of the United Nations system while gaining practical exposure in diplomacy and training development.

MDPU is responsible for designing and delivering UNITARโ€™s Core Diplomatic Training (CDT), which encompasses orientation briefings and a series of short, intensive skills-development workshops. Every year, these trainings benefit approximately 2,500 diplomats at UN Headquarters and other major duty stations.

In addition to CDT, MDPU conducts training initiatives at regional and national levels in collaboration with governments, universities, and selected international organizations. The portfolio further includes e-learning programmes, special projects, advisory services for diplomatic academies, and the production of training materials and publications.

MDPU welcomes qualified and motivated candidates for an in-person traineeship of four to six months at UNITAR Headquarters in Geneva. While this is an unpaid placement, selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend of 900 CHF to help cover transportation and incidental expenses.

Background

As part of UNITARโ€™s strategy to continuously enhance its training offerings, MDPU has developed Masterโ€™s Programmes in partnership with international academic institutions. The Online Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy and its related certifications provide an excellent opportunity for students and professionalsโ€”whether from governments, international organizations, NGOs, or academiaโ€”to strengthen their knowledge of international relations and expand their competencies in multilateral diplomacy.

These programmes attract diplomats, government officials, UN personnel, students, and other key stakeholders seeking advanced academic and professional development.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Programme Officer, the trainee will support the implementation and coordination of the Online Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy and its related courses. Responsibilities will include supporting the design, management, and quality assurance of academic and training components, as well as contributing to admissions, communications, and outreach activities.

Typical duties include:

  • Assisting in the preparation, design, and delivery of UNITARโ€™s Masterโ€™s Programme and related qualifications.
  • Adapting online learning materials and course content to meet academic and quality standards.
  • Supporting the admissions process, including liaising with applicants and partners.
  • Coordinating with partner institutions and beneficiaries during programme preparation and delivery.
  • Conducting research to support the development of training tools, academic modules, and new partnerships.
  • Contributing to outreach and communication initiatives, particularly community engagement activities.

Assignments may be adjusted throughout the traineeship to reflect evolving programme priorities.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the traineeship, the selected candidate will be able to:

  • Translate strategic vision into practical objectives.
  • Work independently with initiative and responsibility.
  • Build professional relationships with UNITAR and UN colleagues.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen UNITARโ€™s mission and programmes.
  • Operate effectively in a diverse, multicultural environment.
